Maine Student Book Award Nominee, 2012-2013. There's quite a lot going on in this short novel, even though there's not a lot of action. Travis is forced to leave his home and his missing dog, Rosco, and start at a new school. He hates school because he can't read. He's hidden this fact quite well from most people, including his grandfather who is raising him. Enter Velveeta, a wonderfully quirky and hip character who latches onto Travis and draws him out. She's got her own issues, and they end up helping each other cope with their difficult lives. Doesn't sound like much of a story, but you'll like what the author does with it.
