This is a police procedural with an unlikely hero. He's an artist who works as a sheriff, but his irascible father & grandfather were local sheriffs in their time. He's a widower who misses his wife but is lonely & trying to find companionship with the help of Danielle Steele novels for love advice. Set in Idaho, there's plenty of Western lore, and Bo often puts on a folksy persona to get the job done, but he's clever & has a sly wit. I found lots of amusing things in this book that also has a tough case to solve with three murders, missing people, & strangers working on a local ranch that seem up to no good. Bo is surrounded by a colorful cast of characters, & his father, Pap, is the most fun. Bo treats him to a 75th birthday party of allowing him to ride along on the murder case where he blows off a lock with a shotgun & wields bolt cutters because he likes them.
