I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction and am looking forward to the release of Empire of the Night, this time period shared through the voice of Catherine the Great rather than her maid, Varvara.

Themes of loyalty, betrayal, power, monarchy, alliances, friendships and how the nuances of each can erode trust and a sense of safety while defining integrity in sometimes curious ways - all of it kept my attention and contributed to the enjoyable read.

Having said that, it felt good to walk away from the treachery - giving you a sense of what it may have been like for the people who endured it every day as part of their ongoing existence.

I rated this book 9/10.
