liked it

First off: the illustrations in this book are just gorgeous. Poster-worthy, striking paintings. They add a lot to the story.

Second: I suspect I would have liked this better if I hadn't already read Joe Kelly's incredibly similar (and generally superior) graphic novel I Kill Giants, which also deals with an imaginative kid getting into serious trouble at school, a struggle against family illness, an ongoing fight with a bully, and a giant monster that serves as a specific metaphor. The two books reach different endings, but they're so close to each other that it's a constant distraction, and Giants does more with the story.
