Tee and her brother, Jack, are in Nome, Alaska with their dad while he researches for a book on sled dogs. Tee friends Quin, the daughter of Joe who is helping Tee’s dad with research. At first Quin and Tee are aloof but quickly realize they have many interests in common, including dogs. On a hike, Tee and Jack think they see a ghost dog and name it Shadow. When talking with Quin, they realize this may be the ghost dog that has been talked about for years, though no one had actually seen it. Deciding to try to get a picture of the dog, Tee and Quin head out, but they forget to check the weather. A storm begins suddenly, trapping them in an old abandoned cabin. They see Shadow again and realize that an older woman is with him. As they follow the woman back to her cabin, they learn the truth about Shadow and solve the mystery of what happened to a girl who disappeared over fifty years ago. The story includes background on Balto and the other sled dog teams that helped bring medicine to Nome during the Diptheria epidemic, giving credit to all sled dog teams. The story is told in two voices- Tee’s and Dodie’s- the old woman who saves Tee and Quin from the storm
