Scarlett Martin's family runs a flapper-era boutique hotel in NYC. The family's so hard on their luck that they recruit the children to help run the business. Ergo, when Scarlett turns fifteen, she is put in charge of the Empire Suite, which becomes occupied for the summer by a C-list Auntie Mame-ish aging starlet, who in turn begins scheming and interfereing with every aspect of Scarlett's life, personal or otherwise.

I love the swanky details in this book: the silent-film era production of Hamlet that her brother becomes involved in, the dumbell-but-sweet rich boyfriend who dates Scarlett's older sister, and, of course, the "perfect" black Christian Dior summer dress (ah, it's featured on the cover!). Fun summery reading.
