After just finishing the Harry potter series, nothing i picked up was remotely as compelling and i needed something to get me out of the nostalgic stupor i usually get after reading those books. Then i found "Water For Elephants" available at my library and thought well i did alway want to read it so why not.

What an awesome read, i truly enjoyed this book. Jacob Jankowski's story was touching, intriguing, endearing, and humorous all wrapped into one. Sara Gruen did a wonderful job of pulling this skeptical reader into the world of the traveling circus, the social hierarchy facilitated by the circus management between the performers and workmen, the evil nature of the equestrian director, the greedy circus manager, the sweetness of the animals, the freaks and creatures of the sideshow, and smack in the middle is Jacob and his infatuation for Marlena the equestrian director's wife. i could almost smell the cotton candy, and feel the motion of the train.

The juxtaposition of a innocently determined Jacob in his early 20s against a cranky Jacob in his 90s who despised aging occurred through a seamless transition. i truly can't imagine anyone hating this book. This story is not earth shattering or over the top, but that is what i love most about it. its a simple story of love and adventure, despite its subplots of mystery, murder, and revenge.
