John "Crash" Coogan is the typical middle school jock, which means he's a big bully who gets a thrill out of picking on kids that are not as "cool" as he is. He and his best friend, Mike Deluca, especially like picking on Crash's neighbor, Penn Webb who is a nerdy kid who wears buttons and doesn't eat meat. One day Mike goes a little too far in his teasing and Crash must decide which side he's on.
This is not a typical bully turned good story in that he doesn't get to the good side in a traditional way. For the first part of the book I just couldn't believe how much I disliked Crash and all the mean things that he does to his neighbor and how badly he treats his sister, but as I kept reading I began to realize that he was hurting as well. He has parents who are uninvolved and he longs for them to be there. It's a great story of change and figuring out who you want to be.
