A great adventure! I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of Jack's quest to find Mimir's Well deep in the land of trolls in order to rescue his sister from certain death as a sacrifice to Freya. Nancy Farmer retells many Norse myths through the experiences of 11 year old Jack, the Saxon apprentice of a bard, who is captured by the Northmen berserkers. He and sister are taken to the Northland as thralls to Olaf One Brow and Queen Firth. This is an exciting read, and is sure to appeal to many of the kids I teach who have enjoyed Lloyd Alexander's books, the Redwall books, or Lord of the Rings.

So what age range would you give to this book?

Deb It's a great middle school read --- maybe 10-14. It kind of depends on the age level. Younger readers might enjoy it as a read-aloud.
