An interesting story based on Jamaicans who fought in WWII and decided that they would have a better life in Great Britain after the war. But prejudice was everywhere, perhaps not as bad as in the US, but enough to make life very difficult.

The story is told through several people, both black and white, and switches between each telling his/her own story both in 1948 (the year in which the main part of the story is told) and "before". This is rather confusing in the beginning, but as the book moves along, all becomes clear.

Not a lot new here, but an interesting glimpse into another culture before and during the war. The ending was strange, however, and I can't decide whether it lent itself to the story, or should have been left out. Judge for yourself.
