really liked it

I have always loved baseball, and I always read John Grisham, so this was must-read material. I enjoyed the two entwined stories. One story traced the evolution of the relationship between a young boy/adult man and his abusive baseball pitcher father. I appreciated Grisham's grit. He did not sugarcoat anything, or force any sappy deathbed reconciliations.
The second plotline dealt with a tragic baseball player's injury that personally affected both father and son and their relationship in complex ways. This plotline was hauntingly reminiscent of Tony Conigliaro's star power and tragic injury. I re-read an excerpt from a book by Rico Petrocelli (former Boston Red Sox third baseman) about Conigliaro and his injury, and I suspect John Grisham may have done so also. Here's a link.

I thought this was one of the best novels Grisham has written in some time.
