Madame Bovary

My main fault as a reviewer/critic is that I cannot like a book if I do not like any of the characters. And I couldn't find a single character worth my sympathy in Madame Bovary. Charles is a weak sad sack; Emma is a self-centered, self-deluding, vain creature. Homais is tiresome. Rodolphe a cad.
The realism that is so praised in Flaubert seemed to stretch on forever. Although I did learn some details of French provincial life in the mid-19th century.
Mostly, I don't feel I can give much of a review, since this simply wasn't my cup of tea; I only finished it because it was part of a reading challenge I signed up for.
