I would call this a mildly positive review. Probably closer to 2 1/2 stars than three. This was assigned for my book group and I only got through about half of it before we met, which is very unusual for me. The first few hundred pages were a real slog and I had to force myself to keep reading. After our meeting it seemed to go faster, possibly in part because I had the outline of what would happen in the second half of the book.

The book deals with English imperialism, both in China and India, and other important issues. Unfortunately, the stark, black and white way the characters are drawn almost approaches Uncle Tom's Cabin levels of caricature.

It's the first book of a trilogy and I'm not sure it stands up by itself. I guess you could put the question as whether it is more like Mutiny on the Bounty or The Fellowship of the Ring (since LOTR is not really a trilogy, but a single book published in three volumes).
