it was amazing

This is the rare "middle book" of a trilogy that's more than just a transitional piece. It's much darker than I anticipated for a YA novel, but I think children who maintain an interest in reading such a dense, richly-worded book series this far into it are more capable of processing such things than many adults give them credit for. It also surprised me a number of times, which is often hard to do to an adult reading YA books, and a hallmark of good writing, when the surprises make sense to the story. They did make sense here, and broke my heart. This is when I knew it was excellent fiction, because I had become so invested in the characters without even knowing it.
