really liked it

This starts out as a murder mystery but soon becomes much more. The lead character, a policeman named Fin, lost his 8 year old son 4 weeks before the story begins. He is sent to Lewis because there is a murder there which might be connected to the one he is investigating at home on the mainland. He grew up on Lewis and the story turns to dark episodes from his past told in the first person.

There's some lovely descriptive writing here and the story is intriguing and involved. I felt, though, that the loss of his young son didn't seem to affect him as I'm sure it would. The author seemed to remember and just mention it now and then which, for me, didn't ring true. It's less of a murder mystery and more of a memoir of childhood. Suppressed memories surface to explain the complex relationships but I was still left with a question. As this is the first of a trilogy I would expect not to have all the answers. Definitely a good story.
