For full disclosure, I begin this review by acknowledging I know this book's author and have been friends with her for over 3 decades. I am excited to see her bring her vision to the page and audiences. She is a five-star person and though she is not her book, the book is so much of HER that is impossible for me to rate objectively. So I deduct one star because I must admit that the book (like its author and myself) is not "for everyone". But for those of you who like time-traveling into lesbian history, lesbians everywhere -lesbian sex, lesbian heartbreak, lesbian drama, and oh yes, sex- this is a match for you.

Exploring all the intricate wrinkles of class, race and gender barriers in the post-civil war American West through the adventures of an intentional family of iconoclastic, barrier-breaking women pioneering different ways of living and loving. The series is devoid of the trauma/oppression porn so common in modern narratives. The stories and the women in them are not defined by the opposition they face, they are tumbling into their own futures daring and dizzying like acrobats without a net. Breaking way for the women (whether by creating medical studies for women or revising the way "marriage" is defined).

This book defies genre. It's fiction but not really. It's historical but not exactly. It's magical but not fantasy. This is the advantage of indie publishing. Love it or hate it, the hand of the market (the expected cliches, the formulas, etc) had no part in shaping the book or the characters in its pages. It is anomolous, singular (like its author) it isn't shaped to fit any expectations. The books in this series are large and unweildy; sometimes so are the characters and story arcs.

Potential Trigger Warning: there is consensual adult incest between sisters and shared partners.
