The title does not accurately represent this book. In fact, this story is much better than the title would suggest. Perhaps in the strictest sense the story may be about a concubine, but in reality, this is a cinderella story about a bride, with all that implies.

The title made me consider giving the book away without reading it, but I looked inside and started reading. Good thing. The characters are vivid and the setting is clearly depicted through word choice and the narrative style. Yan Ling is a delightfully strong-willed yet good-hearted heroine, and Fei Long is appropriately stern and prickly on the outside, yet a decent and caring man of honor within. His actor best friend Bai Shen steals most of the scenes he appears in.

This is a cinderella story, and the reader knows it will be, but Jeannie Lin delivers a fresh retelling in a new setting with some surprising twists among the more expected turns.
