it was amazing

My second book by Sebastian Barry. This is the story of Willie Dunne, a young Irish soldier in WW I. The prose is beautiful but the story is grim. There are many violent images and this book kept me awake at night as I contemplated the horrors of war. Barry describes the use of mustard gas and life in the trenches with vivid, disturbing detail. ( I recently visited the WWI museum in Kansas City so those images were burned into my skull.) Equally distressing were the divided loyalties that Willie faces when he returns to his beloved Ireland. This is a book that will stay with you for a long time.
