Ms Morton raised the bar *extremely* high for me with her previous novel, The Forgotten Garden. I LOVED it. In fact, it was so beautifully written that I didn't want it to end. Unfortunately, The Distant Hours just didn't come close. It was (in my humble opinion), too dark, with a convoluted plotline and superficial character development. I slogged through all 800+ pages (I had the large print edition), hoping that it would somehow rise from the ashes, didn't. That being said, I won't stop with this book. Morton has great talent, and I don't want to give up on her too soon. I am hoping that her next book will captivate and delight me as did The Forgotten Garden.

Lynette Thanks for the heads up. I also loved the forgotten garden so it's good to know about this one not being as wonderful.

Kate Myler I'm just starting The Forgotten Garden and love it already. Glad to hear you liked it, as well!
