This is a tough one to review and I've gone back and forth over whether it should be a 3 or a 4 star rating! There is no mistaking that Crummey is a superb writer.. and on paper this is just my kind of book - two kids fending for themselves in the middle of the wilderness. But this story is grim, grim and more grim... I am definitely ok with grim, but it felt a bit relentless. It's one of those books where you feel compelled to read on, you love the writing and the setting, but the numerous events within the story made me feel dirty and uncomfortable the whole way through - to the point of feeling your stomach churn and a lump in your throat. Maybe that's the sign of a good writer? I just have a feeling this isn't Crummey's best. I won't reveal any spoilers but despite how I might have felt reading the events that happened, I still felt so much for these two siblings, two innocents, who have been left with so little to fend for themselves and have a chance at life.
