really liked it

Laybourne can write well, the characters are nicely drawn, the scenario plausible, the danger real-though distant-and the pace quick. It's a true YA novel - unlike Potter and his cronies I'm not sure this moves across age groups as easily. Our likable hero is a little too mature, his slips back into youth seem more in service to the thread of the story - oh wait, he's just a kid! Even the 5 year olds have a tad too much polish. Isn't there more than one YA book out there with someone stuck in a big box store? The editor could have smoothed closure here: readers may twitch at being dangled with no relief anon.
