The big-picture immigration story and setting of Brooklyn is well done from a bird's-eye view, and I look forward to seeing the film. But I'm still not sure whether the deliberate simplicity of the prose is a pro or a con here. Perhaps both. Sometimes it made the story a giant yawn, and other times it perfectly telegraphed the emotional power of Eilis's plight. Worth reading, but better if you're drawing to quietly beautiful rather than voice-driven or situational plots.
