Carley Connors ends up living as a foster child with the Murphys after her stepfather abuses both her and her mother. Like many novels about foster children, Carley proves to be tough and scared, making her new life challenging. But unlike a lot of novels about foster children, Carley finds someone to show her how to find her inner strength and resilience.Julie Murphy, her foster mother, accepts Carley and shows her what a family's love looks like.

A touching and emotionally powerful story, this is one that's easy to recommend to middle school students. I also liked the short chapters (about 50) with great titles.
