Jonathan Mahler's Death Comes to Happy Valley offers Joe Paterno-centered backstory for the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal. If you want to understand the character of Paterno and Penn State's Paterno worship, but you don't want to read a full-scale biography of Paterno (and why would you?), this long essay is an interesting, informative read. Beware, however, that Mahler has little to say about the molestation scandal itself. The events that brought the Paterno era to a crashing end appear more or less as a coda, not as a subject for substantial discussion.
