This story is not a happy one. After the loss of a mother and wife, a daughter and father try to go on with their lives in an isolated cabin in the Canadian mountains. My 12-year-old daughter stopped reading because of the saddness of the little girl. I don't think my 10-year-old would understand what the story was about, but I know she would be disturbed by the images of the death of the mother. I didn't enjoy it, but the writing was interesting and had a unique quality. I mostly ached for the loss in this family, and for the solitary life they led. My personal preference is to be uplifted. The ending is more positive, but overall, not a story I would recommend for kids.
