Leave the World Behind

A white family is vacationing in the Hamptons when the black owners of the home they are renting show up. Together the families must figure out what’s going on, because something terrible is clearly happening. This is an exceptional examination of race and class and family and what the world looks like when it’s ending—not at all different from the world we are in now. Finely o served details throughout.

Ooh. It sounds like a great story. I can’t wait until it’s out in October!

Added to my reading list! And I just read Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington will start in the movie version of this novel! Exciting!
I am reading the book now and I don't know what I think about it. I keep waiting for something to happen .
My husband and I listen to this book We didn’t think there was that much about race.....I had a lot of everything...lol
Absolutely nothing happened. And there wasn’t anything about race. I am so confused why this is getting good reviews.
The sense of waiting for a big reveal is what makes this so realistic and unsettling. Disaster without explanation, without resolution, without a moment’s pity for the reader. Brilliant and timely.
It lacked for me. I did audiobook. I think maybe the good actors will add the needed emotions. Not until the last 45 minutes did it spark interest.
Can’t believe we never even find out what is happening. It did make me feel a bit better about the Covid predicament but I was super disappointed with the ending. Very strange book.
This is not my usual read, but it really drew me in. The writing is very good and the characters are a jumble of flaws and personality. The ending left me wondering....
The import of this book snuck up on me. It is certainly all about race and our expectation of who belongs where and what roles are appropriate for what kind of people. That aspect of the book alone was very interesting, watching as the adults circle each and try to make sense of their new unexpected relationship. Layer on that the unexplained danger “out there.” Who is the enemy? Who can be trusted? How do we protect ourselves? Very thought provoking in our time of racial reckoning, global pandemic and global political instability.
How on earth people can read this and not see how much this is about race (among other things) is beyond me...and says a lot about our society,
🙄🙄🙄. I was thoroughly annoyed by this read. There was great detail and commentary that was irrelevant to the story. Race was named but didn’t play a significant role other than the identity the families. I was hoping that the ending would make up for it and make it make sense. I still have no sense is the story or what happened. This is a big NO for me.
This is what it would be like. No giant reveal, but a whimper. That is what makes this book so terrifying. Sound pulverizing bones and ticks giving you Lyme disease on steroids. Trying to uphold social constructs in the absence of money and perceived class. This book was exceptional. If you want a book about Godzilla, read a book about Godzilla.
Did not care for this book at all, there is nothing about race. Endless senseless, bravo on the marketing - that's what caused me to read it.
Lots of big words were used for no reason. The characters were not likeable. No real answers to the mysterious happenings.
I thought it was a fantastic read, but it is a disappointment to me.When it comes to writing, it is good, the perspective is there, built up of dialogue among the characters are there, but I can't feel the thrill.
And the ending? No comment
I really got into this book and thought it was very good. But after all the build up, I expected more of a detailed ending.
I was looking forward to it, but left disappointed! I don't see any racial differences here. I think it is the opinion of the characters (or the author).
The ending is abrupt. It left me wondering...
Totally disappointing! I listened to this audio book on a long drive and kept thinking it was about to really pick up and start making sense, but it never did! No solution or conclusion, characters were not particularly likable, and even the writing seemed inconsistent. Passed the time on a long drive, but not really worth it otherwise.
