This is the first bookclub read that I have truly enjoyed reading. Sort of a modern day Scarlet Letter, it takes place in the not too distant future of the United States, when Roe V. Wade has been overturned, a sexually transmitted disease has left millions of women sterile, religion has forced its way into politics, and several states have passed strict Santity of Life laws that equate abortion with murder. Hannah, a good girl from a strict fundamentalist Christian family, has an affair with her married pastor, becomes pregnant, has an abortion, gets caught, and refuses to give up the pastor (as the father) or the abortionist. The punishment for this level of murder in this new age is to be infected with a virus that turns the convicts skin red. Released back into society, Hannah is more than an outcast, her red skin marks her as a target for one of the most militant Christian groups, which seeks out reds (and convicts of other colors) for beatings, toruture, and even death. All while society turns a blind eye. This story tells how Hannah escapes not only from the society that shuns her, but from the the restricting religious beliefs that have held her back from truly apppreciating the person that God has made her to be.
