really liked it
bookshelves: nonfiction-or-memoir, funny-stuff, weird-stuff

I was drawn to this book as a fan of Jenny Slate's movie roles and her stand-up. I feel like she could be seen as an enigmatic and iconic figure in a few more years and her writing backs up this feeling. Yeah, sometimes it's cute and goofy but that's part of Slate finding her voice. Much of the writing has great energy and sometimes the weirdness becomes something more vulnerable and special. I could see some of these stories fitting into a literary journal like Diane Williams's Noon--they are that artful at times. I also want to note that I was kind of lukewarm on the book at first, but then really found Slate's rhythms, sentences, and voice(s) burrowing into the pleasure center of my brain. Bravo, Jenny!
