it was ok

If you're just going to read this because you want background for Diplomatic Immunity, that book will cover the needed background just fine. On its own this book isn't bad, but it's not very good either.

The outcome is obvious from the time the characters begin planning for it, and then it's just a matter of dealing with the requisite Everything Goes Wrong (TM) stage for about a third or more of the book. Predictable and dull, unless you have an interest in Genetic Engineering/Manipulation or Welding AND love the Miles Vorkosgian universe, this is a pass.
