I am not suppose to like this book. It is a bestseller. It was published within the last 20 years. It is overly sentimental. And the mortal blow? Oprah's recommendation. But, oh well. I liked it. I liked the use of a Russian folk tale, I enjoyed the characters, and the scenery.

It is unpretentious and simple, a great joy after a week of slogging through Gravity's Rainbow. Just before starting The Snow Child, I read a review of Gravity's Rainbow in the NYT. The reviewer's last line was: "... we must look to other writers for food and warmth." And while Ivey's work has faults, she provides that food and warmth.
