it was amazing

No spoilers.

Banning books is evil. Stack's novel is not particularly edgier than anything like Palahniuk. To remove it from book stores is clearly political censorship.

If you enjoy Fight Club and Harassment Architecture you will enjoy Day of the Rope.

Stack paces the story well, and certainly knows how to open his story and keep his characters moving, even when they're in a hospital bed.

Some of my criticisms of the writing lie in things like how Stack revisits and glosses back over certain concepts and details, to make extra sure that his readers are following along, as if to make sure that if you missed it, we will be referencing the relevant concepts again. One commenter described this as treating the reader as dumb. I didn't feel like i was being treated dumb, I felt like Stack might be aiming for the most effective method for the ADHD generation to take this in.

Stack uses his character's thought meditations to express his own miniature essays and cultural commentary, and mainly through the protagonist, a radical figure named Ethan. Wayne possesses a more basic conservative mindset. This doesn't hamper the story or pacing. Stack just prefers to spend time in his character's minds. These characters are doing drastic things and we need to know why. We spend time in a lot of character's heads, even the perspective of liberal characters who are intolerant of the conservatives they interact with.

The writing style reminded me more of Stephen King than say, Pynchon. Stack doesn't dwell on the details of the room, how the characters look, what time of day it is, what the place smells like. The scenes are set up with the basics: who what when where and why. This works well with a book that is focused heavily on ideas.

I hope Stack follows this up with another.
