Danny Walker is an excellent basketball player. He has it in his genes. His dad played in the NBA for the Golden State Warriors. There is only one problem. Danny Walker has always been the shortest kid on the court.
Tryouts are coming for the local travel team and Danny is worried that even though he is an excellent basketball player, his height might come into question. A few days pass and the coach breaks the news face to face with Danny and his mother; he didn’t make the team. Danny gets so down on himself. The thought of him quitting basketball would come into question. His father who has never been a real contributor to his life comes into play and brings up the question: why can’t we start our own travel team? Danny and some of his friends from his school come together and start the team, called the Warriors, after his dad’s team.
A few weeks pass by and Danny questions whether his father should’ve started the team or not after a 0-2 start to the season. But, the Warriors pick up some key players and their season starts to turn around. Before you know it, the team is serious contenders for the final. Ever since Richie Walker, Danny’s father started the team, the Vikings, the other local team has been trash-talking them the whole time. The playoffs began. The first game, Danny’s team, the Warriors against the Vikings, the other local team. With Lupica’s writing style and use of suspense, it’s a book that you MUST read to find out what happens.
The pace of the book never gets bored; it truly is a page-turner. In my opinion, this book was a very good read and if you are a sports lover, Mike Lupica’s Travel Team would be an excellent book to read.
