I LOVE Robin McKinley, and I'm trying to collect her books, but this one was far from joining the ranks of my favorites (I've even ranked it lower than Spindle's End, which is GOOD until you reach the climax and things start to go ... weird).

My issue isn't with the plot -- by itself, the plot is fine. It's with the rambling text, and the difficulty in finding the plot amidst Jake's rambles. And then you reach the climax, and you think the book's finally over, only to find that there's still a 51-page epilogue to go.

I really wanted to love this book, but the difficulty in finding the book as well as the distance between where the book should have ended and where it did distracted and disappointed me. I hope Chalice, which I'll be picking up from the library this week, is much better.
