This book was exactly what I expected it to be based on the segments devoted to it on The Colbert Report: brief, silly and fun. The illustrations are cute and compliment the story's tone nicely. Colbert is clearly poking fun at the genre of children's literature, but the story is surprisingly resonant and clever. Although it certainly resembles a children's storybook, one should note that this book is definitely not for children, as there is a bit of adult content and a stripper is briefly featured. The page at the end to draw your own pole alongside Colbert's and Maurice Sendak's and the list of sequels are both nice touches.
