really liked it

I recently reread this for our book group discussion coming up. In high school I probably would have called it one of my favorite books, but I was surprised to find my opinion changed. I still enjoyed the writing and the excellent character development.

The problem is that in my 'old age' I have become a cynic and I didn't appreciate the simple fairy tale ending. The reason I love this retelling is because of the depth of the characters. I like the fact that Beauty isn't beautiful or even confident at first. I also appreciate the Beast's character transformation even though we only see it in hindsight. With the depth of detail, I was prepared for the simple, speedy and magical ending. As a result, it fell from a five star to a four for me.
