really liked it
bookshelves: comics

I don't think I've ever read a comic travelogue that I didn't like. And This is no exception. Glidden does a good job of making fun of her own privileged assumptions and then showing how they cave in even as certain facts about modern Israel that she knows and disagrees with come into sharper focus and prove to be much harder to deal with when one is actually there. She does what any good travel writer does, she shows just how difficult, strange and thrilling it is to really come to grips with a place when you're actually in the place yourself. Especially a place with a history like this. Her watercolor panels do an excellent job of evoking not just epic scenes from history, but of dull bus rides, confusing customs, moments of bucolic isolation, all of the things that make travel travel.
