Solid, if overwrought, YA series containing some adult subject matter

I started this series as a rec from my daughter; its not my usual cup of tea. It is a bit overwrought at times with a touch of earnestness which tracks well with themes younger people gravitate towards (ie, "found family," overcoming mental illness, complex protagonists, etc). As such it is suitabley a YA/NA read. The plot is a bit outlandish for a book set in our reality, but the characterizations draw the reader into the story.
One caveat: although not explicitly detailed the book contains troubling scenes of an adult nature which are described in a carefully allusory way, but young people are adept at deciphering between-the-lines allusions, and anyone considering reccing this to a teen reader should proof read the book first to determine if their intended recipient can handle the scenes.
