4 stars, but only because of Ms. Livesey's superb story-crafting skill.

The story is really dismal, it is full of damaged people: stalkers, unfulfilled lives, disappointments, character flaws....you name it, it's there. Not one person in this mix has integrity or strength of character and all succumb to their most base instincts. That said, it is hard to give up on such a well-written work.

I vastly preferred The Flight of Gemma Hardy, even though the storyline was not this author's own (it is a retell of Jane Eyre). It was equally readable and actually enjoyable. The Missing World is thoroughly distressing, but I do have to say that it really does make the reader think quite a bit about human nature and behavior. Clearly I prefer an ending where at least 1 character has something positive happen, but there is something to be said for a book that makes one really think about the dark side of life....if only to solidify that which we should avoid in life.
