This is not John Scalzi's best book.

This is still a better book than 90% of what I read. Once again, John works his magic with words. This time he retells a story that readers of his previous "Old Man's War" series are familiar with, mostly focused on the "The Last Colony" novel, but told from a very different perspective and with very different details.

Much in the Ender's Game/Ender's Shadow way of telling parallel stories, readers of "The Last Colony" won't feel cheated that this is the same story that they already know. It isn't.

Like most of Scalzi's other work, this novel can easily be read as a stand-alone, not requiring the other books to set the stage, and his style of exposition is natural, so veterans of his books don't feel patronized by re-explanations.
