really liked it

I find the Mallory series very entertaining, and this one is up to the high standard set by the earlier books. The plot moves along quickly, but not so quickly as to detract from the development of a quite diverse set of characters. Suspicion falls on a number of people, and it is mostly merited, but sometimes for reasons that contribute to forwarding the story in oblique ways. All of O'Connell's characters seem to be damaged; some are more damaged than others. But all of them are intensely human. (Mallory, who shows emotion only through subtle actions, is a possible exception. I could with very little effort imagine this as an Asimov novel featuring his robot dectective.)
