Dr. phil. Reyhan Şahin a.k.a. Lady Bitch Ray gives us a musical memoir illustrating how Madonna has influenced her work as a feminist rapper and artist. We do not only learn about Şahin's life as the child of Turkish immigrants in Northern Germany, her experiences as a linguist and her reception in the media, but also about intersectional feminism, sex positivity, and female empowerment. While the author relates all of this to the important role Madonna's portrayal of female agency and sexuality has played for her own empowerment, she also points out the many questionable aspects of Madonna's work and decisions - and the fact that Şahin is a specialist researching the language of youth cultures and the semiotics of fashion certainly helps.

Just like the other installments of the KiWi music library, this small book is radically subjective, and as its author has plenty of stories to tell, it's also highly entertaining. I'm curious to check out the new books of the series that have just been announced for October.
