Set in a hypothetical world after a Chinese-American war that changes the world, but not so much that its unrecognisable, or that it interferes with the plot, the protagonist is a 66 year man, musing on his circumstances, his wife (who wants him to die), his family the nature of the universe, women he wants to (and does) sleep with, and the deer that's eating his wife's roses. It is a very sensual and sinister book. There is a feeling of claustrophobia and dread throughout. For me, it was interesting rather than enjoyable however, given the style and subject of the book.
