it was ok

Meh. I was sucked in by the blurb that stated 'Fans of Locke Lamora will love Eli Monpress' or something to that effect.

Uhm, no.

The author CLEARLY loves Eli and thinks he's just the suavest and slickest fellow ever, but his one con is nothing exciting and the level of imagination is nowhere near that of Scott Lynch. Monpress has a special magical ability that pretty much gets him out of any trouble; he has a friend with a sword that's pretty much a deus ex machina; and another friend who is ALSO a deus ex machina. There was never a time where I felt the protagonists were ever really in any danger. The writing is serviceable but nothing special. Would have been annoyed if I'd paid full price for a single book as opposed to getting the trilogy in an omnibus in a used-book store.
