Don't let the length put you off, or the bleak tone of the first few chapters - this is a very clever black comedy, an expose of the modern family that's much funnier than it is depressing, equally rich in wit and spite. Halfway between the paranoid 1980's intensity of The Bonfire of the Vanities and the ugly 1990's-ness of American Psycho, 2001's The Corrections is a perfect example of "the great American novel".
