While I'm very glad for Ms. Kowal that the success of Shades of Milk and Honey received sufficient acclaim to allow her to sign an extended contract, Shades... was in fact a stand alone and didn't need to be part of a series. In order to achieve a series, Ms. Kowal has had to force the subsequent titles in between the end of the story in Shades... and the end of the book.

This isn't as good as Shades.... David is - frankly - a jerk, and I spent most of the reason trying to remember why Jane fell in love with him in the first place. While I'd never accuse Ms. Kowal of plagiarism, this book has plot details strikingly similar to Tasha Alexander's Tears of Pearl, which repeatedly made me think "this again?"

I'll read the third one next year, but i'm still not at all convinced that Ms. Kowal shouldn't have talked the publisher into allowing her to do something else with this 3-book contract.
