I'm a sucker for Anne Tyler, even though she inhabits an insular white middle class island. Still, she does women better than almost anyone else on her level, and she explores the pressures of belonging to a "clan" with wisdom and insight. Her Baltimore ropes you in and holds you to the last page. But this is one of her lesser works, its premise shaky and its conclusion tidy--a bad characteristic for any conclusion. Fun to read but easy to forget.
