Reading this aloud right now with my 4th grader. She's enjoying it, but as a parent in the 21st century, it's hard not to read it as pure fantasy -- which the book has always been (young boy leaves the city and ekes out a solo living in the woods). In an age when people get all up in arms about children walking home from school or riding the subway alone, it's funny to read about a young boy hitching a ride from a stranger, and said stranger dropping him off in the woods saying, "see ya!"
