2.5 stars. I really should have read these books when I was younger. As much as I hate to slap a two star rating on this unquestioned classic of fantasy literature the truth is that I thought it was somewhere above "Okay" but not quite to "I like it" and so I settled on 2.5 stars.

My problem with the book really stems from the fact that it is more YA than I am used to reading. This is certainly not an inherent flaw in the story as it was written for children but it did affect my enjoyment of it. I do have to point out that I really enjoyed the segment of the story about the "Magician's Book." I thought that was superb. However, the rest of the book just didn't appeal that much.

Notwithstanding the above, once I have completed the series (which I still intend to do) I plan on reading these to my daughters as I think they will really enjoy these. I hope to experience more of the magic of the books through their enjoyment (hopefully) of the books.

Diane I think you might be right, that you really get the most out of these books if you are a child. I think 9 or 10 is about the perfect age for a first reading. I was 8 or 9 and I've read (most of) them multiple times about equally many as an adult as as a child. I'm no reading them in quick succession to my 5 year old and he is loving them. This time as an adult I'm appreciating them even more. The language and vocabulary is challenging for children and so is the subject matter. I'm enjoying the continuity between books, the characters which reappear and stories that are alluded to. Voyage of the Dawn Treader has always been my favorite, we're reading it now, so I'm curious how my experience of it will change this time.
