A very enjoyable literary mystery channeling Dickens with a few streaks of Jane Eyre. And a truly eerie twist at the end! The author's presence in the book is interesting - the story is told in present tense, which I found a bit unusual for a mystery and for historical fiction, and occasionally the author calls our attention to things she and we (the readers) know that the main character does not. But it's done skillfully enough that it does not break the narrative sense of time and place. Fans of Jasper Fforde will like this one! (Thanks Random House for the Early Bird Read)
