really liked it
bookshelves: ya-fiction, supportive-adult-characters

I am always duly impressed when I personally know an author. I would like this book even if I knew nothing about her. A great clean YA choice for boy readers - or reluctant readers - as the case may be. Several clever tie-ins to reading, learning to read at a very late age, and other books, including The Book Thief and things that happen IN The Book Thief. I liked the alternating voices, but never know how kids will deal with those type of things. A pretty realistic picture of kids being raised by negligent parents and alcoholic grandparent, but with supportive adults (librarian, neighbor and teacher) to keep them sane and really make a difference in their lives. Not at all preachy, just a good, realistic contemporary story that could take place in any small rural town.
